Non-Judgemental Parent Support

WIC peer counselors are parents with personal experience in breastfeeding and have special training in lactation and breastfeeding support. They can share their own experiences and provide help and advice based on current research.

When you are pregnant or a new parent, it helps to talk to other parents who know what you’re going through.

Someone with you every step of the way

Your peer counselor will be with you every step of the way from your pregnancy through the first year.  She will provide you with the information you need, answer questions and support your decision- whatever you decide.

How can a WIC Peer Counselor help me?

Peer counselors provide support by phone or text and are available in the evenings and weekends, when parents often have questions!

Peer counselors can:

    • Help you get a good start and feel confident in lactation and breastfeeding.
    • Provide personalized support to help you on your feeding journey.
    • Help you learn how to understand your baby and respond to what your baby is telling you.
    • Provide tips on how to nurse or pump comfortably.
    • Answer questions and help with concerns.
    • Connect you with a lactation expert for more complex concerns and challenges.
    • Provide tips on how to make enough milk to feed your baby.
    • Support you with maintaining your supply when returning to work or school and help with a milk expression plan.

Breastfeeding peer counselors are available for WIC clients at all of our WIC clinic sites. Regardless of whether you plan on breastfeeding or not, Healthfirst WIC is committed to providing you with education and support!

Weekly Breastfeeding Class

Through the State WIC program, Healthfirst offers a free, weekly, virtual breastfeeding class option that provides you with basic information and the general how-to’s of breastfeeding! Classes are offered every Monday in English and every Tuesday in Spanish. Reach out to your Peer Counselor or WIC staff if you are interested in joining one of these classes!

Monthly Breastfeeding Support Group

In addition to the State WIC program’s Breastfeeding Class, Healthfirst also offers a monthly virtual breastfeeding support group for ALL caregivers to attend. This support group is offered throughout pregnancy to help learn more about breastfeeding, share concerns, and debunk breastfeeding myths.
