Fail, Survive, or Thrive

January 19, 2023 @ 12:00am

I have taken a bit of a hiatus from writing this blog. The holidays came. I took 11 days off to write a literature review for my doctoral study and rest a bit. The past year has been intense. Running a business, raising a family, and going to school for a doctorate is not for the faint of hearts. But I push myself continually and work to obtain my highest of standards. With all of that though, sometimes a break is good.

Healthfirst closed out a killer year. Growth, growth, and more growth was the name of the 2022 game. Growth in clients, growth in revenues, and growth in the team. It has set us up for the prospects of another successful year in 2023. It will take even more perseverance as there are going to be some changes in federal funding. But self-sustainability has always been the name of the game. Grant funding comes and goes, however, Healthfirst has been here for 50 years! And we are here to stay. Putting our mark on the reproductive health world.

About 5 years ago, I went through an amazing leadership class. Literally the best out there! I learned so much and we talked often about finding our why. And being up to something big. I have noodled on those concepts for many years. I have always felt that my job is my something big. But last week some things clicked like they never had before. I finally felt that I was living my why and something big to the greatest extent.

I live in the reproductive world and am hit with adversity every day. Literally every day. But there is this project I have been working on involving an invisible population. A population that is brought here for work, and really not treated the best. And every time I bring it up, the forces that be smack it down. The population is humans, and they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. They also must be seen as humans not dollar signs. However, so often they are just a cheap means to increased revenue. And that does not sit well with me. That is also when things started to click. My something big is fiercely advocating for the rights and treatment of invisible populations.

So here we are about a month after a notice that our ability to serve the invisible population would be dramatically decreased. However, as many of you know, that notice did nothing more than add fuel to my fire. I do not go down without a fight. And round 1 of that fight was won last night! The notice kicked me and my team into overdrive, with the end result better than we could have imagined. A new partnership, a new spot, and even more accessibility to serve the invisible population.

I am in this for the long haul. And there are many more rounds to come. Many more conversations to be had. And so much more work that is needed. To ensure the invisible population is transformed from a means to an end to a population treated with respect and dignity. Thank you to my team for hanging on for this crazy ride and having the same dedication and drive to help as I do. We are going to make a difference.
